What would cause oil pressure to drop when idling?
What would cause oil pressure to drop when idling?
Low oil pressure at idle only, will most often mean that the engine is low on oil. As more power is applied to the engine via acceleration, the pressure builds up inside the engine. High oil temperature can cause low oil pressure. A defective oil pump can also lead to low oil pressure at idle.
What to do if your car has no oil pressure?
Once the engine has warmed up the oil pressure returns to what could be considered “normal”. After the cold start, no oil pressure problem, the engine and the oil pressure is fine for the rest of the day. Let it even set overnight though and I have a repeat no oil pressure with start up.
When does the oil pressure come back up?
After the engine has been running for about a minute or so the oil pressure finally comes up but not to normal. Once the engine has warmed up the oil pressure returns to what could be considered “normal”.
Why does my oil pump have no pressure?
Another possibility if you haven’t actually checked the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge is that the sensor is gummed up and sticks for a bit on the first cold start before it begins measuring properly. Thought all oil pumps had relief valve for cold starts? Cold oil is thick, high viscosity.
Why did I not get a low oil pressure light?
Like I said above, you’re not sucking air which is why you didn’t get a low oil pressure light…. so you don’t have a low oil pressure problem. You almost certainly have not damaged your engine. if I replaced the oil, should my car work again? No because you have a problem unrelated to your oil.

Why is there not enough oil in the engine?
The most common problem is that there is simply not enough oil in the engine. The oil level may simply be below the oil pump supply tube. Simply put, this will cause the oil pump not to work as it does not have the ability to pump oil to the engine components. The solution is to simply add the correct level of oil to the engine.
