My four wheel drive is stuck in 4H and will not disengage. I can switch to 4L and the light comes on but makes a pretty loud clunk engaging. When I put it in 4H it sound like it goes back in with a loud clunk also but no light comes on.
Why does my 4WD not disengage on pavement?
Your 4WD did not disengage because of the strain put on the transfer case due to driving on pavement. Sometimes just a little strain can prevent the auto transfer case to lock up. When you put it in reverse, this alleviates the pressure and the transfer case can unlock.. This will continue to happen if you use 4WD on pavement.

I replaced the actuator on the front axle, that didn’t change anything. Push buttons just blink then it stays in 4 wheel drive.
