Checking your ball joints when driving is straightforward, simply:
- Take your car out for a drive.
- Drive over speed bumps.
- Turn the steering wheel.
- Check your tyre wear.
- Loosen the lug nuts.
- Jack up the car and place wheel chocks behind the wheels.
- Rock the tyre on its axis.
- Remove the wheel.

You can buy the “special tool” for about 40$-$80 using the part number OTC 6695. The axle and seal can also be taken to the dealer and they will press it on. For me it was easier to make the tool and do it myself.
