Why does the coolant keep coming back through the bottle?

Why does the coolant keep coming back through the bottle?

14 people found this helpful. Take your radiator cap off when the engine is cool. Start your car and watch the inside of the radiator. You should see the fluid circulating if you have removed the thermostat. If fluid is not moving, something has to be plugged. Usually the bottle fills if the engine begins to over heat. How’s your temp readings?

How do you fill a radiator coolant reservoir?

Fill coolant reservoir to MAX. Add coolant to radiator to base of filler neck. Loosely install the radiator cap. Start engine; run until radiator fan comes on. Turn off engine and add coolant to radiator if needed. Tighten radiator cap. And then there’s those systems with pressurized coolant reservoirs…

What are the symptoms of a bad coolant tank?

Below are common symptoms that may appear with a faulty coolant expansion tank. As coolant gets hot due to it absorbing heat from the engine, the liquid expands and creates additional pressure in the radiator.

Why is the coolant not returning to the radiator?

When the overflowing coolant reservoir does not return to the radiator the hot coolant that needs to be cooled down, means that there might be a leakage or clog of the radiator hoses that allow the flow of fluid from the coolant reservoir to the radiator. It can be a result of a damaged radiator cap.

Where is the coolant tank in an engine?

Fill the tank with excess coolant. The picture to the right shows how the tank has been raised and fixed higher than the highest coolant hose in the engine. You will usually find one of them nearby the thermostat (left) and another at the coolant hoses entry point to the cabin compartment (right). You might need to remove air hoses to reach them.

Why is my radiator pushing coolant into the overflow tank?

My radiator seems to be pushing the coolant into the overflow tank. When I am done driving and i take off the radiator cap the radiator is low, no coolant above the fins. but the over flow tank is full and it pushes coolant out the top hose on the over flow tank. I can see the coolant dripping down the fender well.???????

When does the coolant go back into the radiator?

It maintains a pressure when the radiator is hot, but also has a secondary valve that is blocked when the radiator is pressurizes, but opens when the radiator pulls vacuum to let the coolant from the reservoir go back to the radiator. If the coolant is dirty, the secondary valve can get plugged.

Why is there no coolant in the expansion tank?

I traced it down to the hose between the radiator and expansion tank. It acted like a check valve. The coolant would be forced into the tank, but the vacuum created when the radiator cooled could not pull the coolant into the radiator. $2 worth of tubing and clamps and 10 minutes labor fixed the problem.
