Why does my car make a noise when I turn the air on?

Your engine is under a heavier load when you run the AC. So if you turn on your AC and hear a rattle, it may mean you have a failing or bad: AC compressor. Rattling or your car air conditioner making loud humming noises which get worse as you accelerate can both be signs you need to replace your AC compressor.

Why is my return vent making noise?

When it comes to air returns making funky noises, though, there are usually a few common culprits: Dirty air filters and/or air ducts: Typically, air returns are covered with vents or grills. When vents or ducts are clogged with dust and debris, the result is reduced airflow which can cause annoying noises.

Why does my air vent make a noise?

If the usual noise volume increases, or you start to hear flapping, rattling or high-pitched sounds from the supply vents, return grilles or ceiling diffusers, it’s likely due to an increase in pressure caused by airflow restrictions somewhere in the HVAC system.

What makes a rattling noise when the air is on?

Recently when the air is on (vent, heat or AC) a rattling noise that I would say sounds similar to…fan bearings is coming from the passenger side dash air vent. Not sure what the issue is, the sound does not seem to come from any of the other vents.

Why does my air conditioner make a noise when I turn it on?

As mentioned if the vents are blowing anything the vent is making the noise. So if the dial for the vent is on the noise is there, it does not seem to get noticeably louder if you turn the vents up to full blast however. I am not sure how to describe the noise beyond a rattle. – James Aug 29 ’14 at 14:04

What does it sound like when a car fan is left on?

Best way to describe the sound is it sounds like plastic hitting plastic, almost as if you would strike the dash with a plastic dowel. I’ve also heard the noise when the car is shut off and I’ll bump against it. If the fan is left on when I shut the car off, it will start clicking as soon as I start the car.
