What do slider pins do?

What do slider pins do?

The floating section is bolted to two pins called slide pins (lavender color in the picture). These pins are greased and allow for proper alignment of the caliper to the brake rotor and still allow for the movement needed under normal driving.

How do brake slider pins work?

The caliper is fed brake fluid through a banjo fitting which drives the piston forward towards the inside brake pad when the brake pedal is pushed. This causes the caliper to move along the slide pins which then pulls the outside brake pad up against the brake disc rotor.

How to lubricate caliper slider pins-YouTube?

Loosen caliper mounting bolts & slider pins , remove caliper, grease slider pins, re-assemble. If the caliper is defective – click here to see how to replace the caliper

What should I do if my slide pin is sticking?

Replacement pins and sleeves may be required to repair this condition. Never grind off the gold or chrome finish. It leaves the pin susceptible to pitting and excessive wear.

What happens when the slide pins are frozen?

If the slide pins are frozen, the outboard pad doesn’t slide into contact with it’s side of the rotor. This means that the inside pad is doing most if not all of the braking. Not Good. A sliding caliper slides on rails or ways on the mounting bracket. These rails can become rusty or corroded, causing the caliper to bind instead of slide.

Why do I need a slide pin boot?

Their job is to keep the water, sand and dirt away from the slide pin bores and helps keep the special grease inside. When pin boots don’t keep the bad stuff out anymore, the pins can seize. Most of the time, this condition causes the brake to have trouble releasing or letting go when you drive off.

What happens if you loose a slide pin on a brake?

Worn or loose slide pins or caliper slides result in caliper twist and lost brake performance. Always use the proper lubricant when working with brakes. Rubber components require a high temperature silicone or synthetic lubricant specially designed for these rubber parts.
