Removing the heater hose quick-connect couplers at the firewall is a Grade-A pain in the butt. I bought the removal tools (Lisle brand about $35.00) and the tools at least made it possible (no way without them), but was still fussy. When a loss of coolant is not obvious, I use a pressure tester and pump up the system.
