What is a Ford HCU?
What is a Ford HCU?
The anti-lock braking system (ABS) computer, or HCU, is a node on a high-speed vehicle bus. The modulator gets the brake pressure from the master cylinder. Inside are the valves and solenoids that control the pressures to the wheel.
What kind of brake system does Ford Escape Hybrid use?
Do not mess with those wires until you have been properly trained on that model vehicle. Simply put, those orange cables can kill you. The 2005 to 2008 model Escape Hybrids use an electro-hydraulic brake (EHB) system. The EHB master cylinder is also referred to as an actuation control unit (ACU).
Do you need to recharge a hybrid brake system?
The high voltage batteries need to be recharged on the drive. The control side of a hybrid brake system contains differences, compared to its conventional cousins, to accommodate these conditions. All technical references here will be directed at 2005 to 2010 Ford Escape and Fusion Hybrid vehicles.
When to use friction brakes on Ford hybrid?
Unlike the older model where the rear friction brakes are lightly applied for “normal” braking, the friction brakes are not applied at all for “normal” braking with this system except for when at a near stop or a stop to hold the vehicle from rolling.
How does ABS work on a Ford hybrid?
The ABS module “tells” the PCM or TCM (model year dependent), that a request for brakes have been made and how much braking is desired. The PCM or TCM, then applies regenerative braking, via the traction motor inside the transmission, as needed.
How does HCU work on Ford Escape Hybrid?
The HCU adjusts how much hydraulic braking is applied so your foot-signal-to-brake rate are consistent. It is similar to ABS that works with every brake apply. It is an expensive bit of technology that wore out. So your car is broken and takes as much as it is worth to fix it. This is no different than a blown engine costing as much as the car.
How much does a Ford Escape Hybrid cost?
Apparently you’re not the only Escape Hybrid owner getting stuck by Ford with their $5000 replacement HCU’s. For that kind of cash I’d seriously consider selling the thing for parts and buying a different vehicle.
How much does it cost to replace the brakes on a Ford Escape?
Brought in for service at dealership and they found codes C1478 and C1480. They’re quoting me $5,300 to replace the Hydraulic Control Unit. Also, when picking it up, now the Check Brake System light is on all the time and the vehicle basically has no brakes.
Is there a recall on a Ford Escape?
A full investigation should be initiated and if this turns out as serious as indicated Ford should be forced to issue a recall. This is the price to be paid for modern technology and all of the gee whiz features desired by customers and/or mandated by the Feds. Things like this are not proprietary to Ford either.
