BACK UP- You said that there was a collar floating on the shaft. When the Primary clutches wear out the Brass bushing in the face cover comes out and rides freely on the shaft. It puts the clutch in a bind and raises the RPMS. It also stops the clutch from shifting out all the way and causes over-rev or sounds like the belt is slipping.

I would pull the belt and rub it down with a green scotchbrite scrubby, and pull the primary spring and see if the primary cycles in and out properly. Also check the rollers that run on the back of the clutch weights to see if the are bound up. If they are they wont allow proper pressure on the belt.

Talked to a Polaris dealer today, said he thinks water has gotten into the belt housing and is still in there. That makes a lot of sense with the way it ran yesterday with improved performance initially, then acting up again, which could be caused by water sloshing around and getting the belt wet.
