How do you change the filter on a transmission?

How do you change the filter on a transmission?

Changing the fluid and filter is a quite messy and time-consuming job because few transmissions are equipped with a drain plug. That means the only way to reach the transmission filter and allow old fluid to escape is by removing the transmission pan.

Where is the transmission fluid filter?

The transmission filter is a vital part of that system and is situated above the transmission pan, which catches any excess fluid, and below a pickup tube that connects to the oil pump, which regulates the pressure of fluid in the transmission.

Can a dirty transmission filter cause transmission failure?

A dirty or ill-fitting transmission filter can result in leaking, noise, contamination – and worst – transmission failure. On the other hand, well-maintained or new filters keep contaminants out of your transmission fluid, averting premature transmission failure and ensuring a stress-free ride.

Why do you need an automatic transmission filter?

An automatic transmission filter prevents contaminants from affecting components within the transmission. This may seem counter-intuitive. Why wouldn’t you change your filter? It seems obvious, right?

Does my transmission have a filter?

In general, manual transmissions do not have filters, automatic ones do. The filter in an automatic transmission is internal; in order to replace or clean the filter you need to first drain the fluid, then remove the pan on the bottom to access the filter.

What does your transmission filter do?

The transmission filter functions as a sieve to collect contaminants like dirt and debris before sending lubricating fluid to the transmission itself. Over time, bits of metal that have flaked off from metal-to-metal contact and other grit and grime can dirty a transmission filter.

Does transmission filter need replacement?

If you find that you are unable to change gears easily or you cannot change gears at all, a problem may have developed with the transmission filter. In fact, the transmission filter may need to be replaced if the gears grind or the vehicle abruptly surges when shifting gears.

Is there an automatic transmission filter?

Most automatic transmissions have a filter that traps debris in the system and changing this filter is part of a complete service. Most transmission filters are located on the bottom of the valve body and are clearly visible once the transmission oil pan has been removed. Look for the white or yellow plastic mesh on the bottom of the filter.
