How do you service suspension pivots?

  1. Remove some stuff to make it easier. Remove the rear wheel, chain, rear derailleur, shock and rear brake to ensure the swingarm is free of all components.
  2. Unscrew each pivot bolt.
  3. Keep an eye out for spacers.
  4. Keep things in order.
  5. Clean and degrease hardware.
  6. Clean but don’t degrease bearings.
  7. Close inspection.
  8. Shaft greasing.

Where are the pivot points on a bike?

Where are the pivots? “Pivots” is shorthand for any place on the brakes and derailleurs where two parts are moving against each other (pivoting on each other). You can see this with the bike in a repair stand if you squeeze the brake levers and watch the brake calipers.

How do you apply grease?

  1. Wipe grease fitting clean.
  2. Under dirty or wet conditions, flush the bearing thoroughly before applying grease.
  3. Apply the recommended grease until new grease appears at each end of the bearing.
  4. Leave a collar of grease at each end of the bearing to seal out contaminants.

Should I grease suspension bolts?

Bolts do not need grease. You can use it if you’re worried about corrosion as mentioned above. Loctite isn’t usually needed either, nylock nuts are a much better option.

What can I use to lubricate my bike chain?

You can use chainsaw (bar) oil as a wet bike chain lube and would be best used for riding in inclement weather where you need a sticky oil that will not get washed off from rain or wet conditions. Unless you’re consistently riding in rainy weather, this lube is too sticky for most riding conditions.
