What is normal firing line voltage for secondary ignition?
What is normal firing line voltage for secondary ignition?
Tensions in the secondary circuit of ignition during the combustion of spark are usually between 1 kV-2 kV. Spark combustion length is normally between 1.5 mS to 2 mS. The “spark line” is the actual time the spark is moving across the plug gap. Normally, this should be between 1.5 mS to 2.0 mS.
What is secondary ignition?
Ignition systems have two circuits that result in a spark being fired at the end of a spark plug. The secondary circuit is between the ignition coil and the spark plug. A secondary ignition circuit consists of three components and is the basis for newer variations of the ignition system.
How can high firing kV cause secondary ignition problems?
We can still see the effects of secondary perforation caused by high kV (ex. worn sparkplugs) in the familiar black carbon tracks on spark plug insulators and the tiny gray dots poking through spark plug boots and ignition coils. The lesson here is that high firing kV can cause as many problems as it solves, especially at higher altitudes.
What does sec ondary mean for secondary ignition?
Any trace of a spark line in the pattern (Fig. 10) indicates secondary voltage leakage, usually inside the distributor. Now that you’ve looked at a number of common symptoms revealed by sec- ondary scope patterns, you can reach some informed conclusions about an engine’s vital signs.
What should the resistance be for secondary ignition?
Measure the coil’s secondary winding resistance with ohmmeter. Normal resistance must be around 7000Ω. Switch ignition on but do not start the engine. Use a voltmeter to check whether battery voltage is applied to the coil’s positive terminal (usually “2”) and chassis ground.
How is the spark kV of a secondary circuit affected?
Spark KV is affected by the actual resistance of the secondary circuit, from the ignition wire, through the plug, across the gap to ground. High spark Kv means higher than normal resistance, and lower spark Kv means lower than normal resistance.
