Turns out one of the two selector cables coming from the gear stick, had slipped out of one of the plastic open ended connectors, [shaped like the letter C ] that went into the gear box. He put it back in and we could select gears. So he said follow me back to the garage, 6 miles away.

What kind of gearbox does Mk1 focus have?
In 5th today, tried to change to 4th and it wouldn’t go, tried 3rd with same result. Ended up pulling over and starting again from first, which it did. Got home ok but this happened twice more during a 10 mile journey. It also crunches into reverse. Car is a mk1 focus and it had a new clutch last year.
