How to know if you need to replace your thermostat?

If desired, test your thermostat. 1 Get a pot of water boiling. 2 Insert your thermostat. The thermostat should open at around 190 ºF (88 ºC). Since water boils at 212ºF (100ºC), this is more than enough. 3 If the thermostat doesn’t open in the water (and then close when it cools), you need a new one.

Where is the thermostat located on a car?

The thermostat is located on the side of the water pump where the lower hose from the radiator connects. If you are going to be working on the thermostat, make sure the car is cool and not under pressure. Working on a hot engine or one under pressure can cause serious harm (coolant is also very toxic) and should never be attempted.
