What kind of fluid do you use in a convertible?
What kind of fluid do you use in a convertible?
This question is for the guys who own a convertible. I wanted to know what type of fluid you use for your hydraulic pump. I’m assuming hydraulic fluid. I have heard people put power steering fluid and even ATF which I’m not comfortable putting that in but I thought I would ask since my fluid is clear in the pump now thanks.
What kind of hydraulic fluid does a Mustang use?
Click to expand… What they put in it at factory was probably hydraulic fluid that met the specs of that system. But if the motor has a sticker that says use ATF, then use ATF. You can only assume that the ATF is better then the original….think about it.
Why did Ford use a different fluid form?
As far why they used a different fluid form factory it was probably a cost cutting measure.

How do you check / bleed / add fluid to a convertible top?
No, not by the pump. But when the pistons are closed the pump should be filled with fluid. By a piston being closed, the shaft is inside the tube. Closing the piston returns the fluid to the pump/reservior. Better safe than sorry! My top for my 90GTvert is closed and won’t open.
Where is the correct fill level for a top motor?
Don’t overfill or damage to pump/motor may occur. The proper fill level of the fluid is between the top and bottom of the plus sign on the reservoir, when the top is latched at the header and the decklid is closed. As the lost fluid is replaced in each component, the reservoir will drain. Check the reservoir often while running the top up and down.
What kind of fluid do you use on a 88 Mustang?
I replaced my top motor in my 88 last spring and they said to use a high quality ATF fluid. They reccomended ATF Mercon V so that is what I used. It’s not in the manual it doesn’t say thanks though. I dont own a vert, but check the owners manual if its still around, im sure it will tell you what fluid is needed.
What kind of fluid is used in a convertible?
The air bubbles should rise to the top. I “believe” the Hybrid PS/Hydraulic Fluid used in the WK/WK PS systems, was first developed and used for an earlier Convertible Chrysler Car, that had a power convertible roof run off the PS pump.
