You could do it the safer way and install a remote starter that has a pit-stop mode (similar to what police cars have on them) that would lock the ignition with the vehicle still running and allow you to remove the key from the ignition. Why does the door lock on my Dodge Ram?
When I went back the door was locked. Several times now, It has self locked. I found out later that the original owner had purchased a regular key and hid it on the truck so he could get in if he locked the keys in the car when fueling.
