Do you need to take the pinion bearing apart?

Do you need to take the pinion bearing apart?

Yes, that is the case if you are setting up new gears. But if you the FSM you will notice that it says to take a reading before taking anything apart. This is your point of reference that includes the pinion preload and the torque it takes to turn everything else as well. So in this case you don’t need to tear the assembly comletely apart.

Do you have to remove the carrier and pinion?

Pinion preload is just that…pinion. If you’re also spinning the carrier and the the shafts, it will obviously take more force to spin all that than just the pinion. So brakes, shafts, and carrier will have to be removed as well.

How long does it take to replace a pinion nut?

It’ll take an extra 30 mins or so, but you’ll have an easier time to R2 that bearing. That is pretty hard on the gears to use an impact gun on them…having said that sometimes it is necesary and I had to do that on my front pinion nut when replacing the seal.

Can a crush sleeve be replaced with a pinion?

the pinion has two bearings. An inner and an outer (toward yoke). The outer can be removed and replaced along with the crush sleeve without removing the pinion, therefore not removing the carrier and soo on. I will post up how the job went.

Can you change the bearing preload on a pinion nut?

If the new yoke and old yoke are as little as .005 inch different in thickness then your pinion bearing preload will be way off. Torquing the nut will not change the bearing preload.

Do you have to replace the pinion seal?

After searching here and then trying to replace the pinion seal the first time with just the main seal, I wasn’t very happy with the results: Leaky one day and then no leak for a few days . . . I have read in many places that you have to replace the yoke because of the other part of the seal.

Do you need a pinion retainer on a GM 9.5?

Preload is taken with axles pulled and dif. drained. This applies to 8.5,9.5,10.5 and 11.5. The 9.5 has additional requirements and specifications because it has a pinion retainer assembly. No, GM requires all with crush sleeve.

Do you have to remove the carrier for a pinion change?

Gm does not call for the carrier to be removed, There is another set of pinion rotating specifications if the sleeve, pinion or bearings are replaced, this is done with the carrier removed. I made a typo on the 9.5 with pinion retainer, it should be 10.5. Pinion has a retainer like a 9 inch Ford.
