Why is my timing chain tensioner not working?

Why is my timing chain tensioner not working?

The dealership confirmed today that there are metal fragments in the oil filter and in the oil. Luckily, we have 2 warranties on the vehicle so it should be taken care of, but now we’re unsure of what we should expect. The dealership says that it could take a few weeks, especially with the holidays before they can get an engine in to replace it.

What causes low tension on a car belt?

Low installation tension (manually tensioned drives), belt stretch, extreme belt wear, tensioner spring degradation or a belt that is too long Fluid contamination on the belt (oil, power steering fluid, antifreeze, belt dressing, brake cleaner, etc.)

How old was the timing chain when it broke?

Our timing chain broke at JUST under 50,000km, 2 years old. Initially, the engine was making a strange noise on startup that would go away and sometimes return on acceleration. No warning lights came on. Within a week, the timing chain broke and the motor blew apart.

When to replace a tensioner on a belt?

On systems equipped with an automatic tensioner, the tensioner pulley should turn freely without binding, the tensioner arm should move smoothly through its entire range of motion and there should be adequate tension. Replace the tensioner and /or pulley as required

Why is my timing belt tensioner making a noise?

If the noise remains, it may be the timing belt tensioner. Warning: Running the engine with the belt removed will keep the battery from charging and can set a check engine light. Make sure you keep this to a minimum and turn the engine off once you determine whether the noise changes.

How is the tension on a camshaft timing belt measured?

Refit the drive-belt cover and fan belt. On Leyland ‘O’ series engines, the belt tension is measured with a spring balance and adjusted manually. The belt tensioner has no automatic spring. To measure the tension, use a spring balance with its hook bent to an L shape to fit flat against the belt. (If necessary, use a separate L hook.)

What happens if the belt tensioner does not work?

Since the belt tensioner keeps the proper spinning of the drive belts in the car’s engine, certain components or accessories may fail to operate if there’s a problem with the tensioner. For instance, the alternator may not work.

What happens when you replace a timing belt?

When replacing any part of the timing belt system, it is important to take care when moving the engine. Some engines are interference engines – meaning that damage to the engine can occur due to piston contact with the valves, should the engine be moved out of time.
