Sometimes it might just hang on before pulling back up to 1k revs (needle goes up down like a yoyo though) Once warmed up, revs take on a mind of their own. If I pull up stuck in traffic, revs can fly up to 3000+ for a couple of seconds before dropping to about 1.2k.

My Ford Mondeo Mk3 (54 plate) has been behaving strangely for the last few months. These are the issues: In the morning, revs often drop to zero at the first junction and the car cuts out. Sometimes it might just hang on before pulling back up to 1k revs (needle goes up down like a yoyo though) Once warmed up, revs take on a mind of their own.
What causes erratic idle on a Ford Mondeo?
It is a real pig to drive at the moment!! Very little to go wrong on these.Erratic idle is usually dirty air control valve or sticking throttle butterfly or cable.Another possible is a split engine breather hose,located low down at the front of the engine,between the inlet manifold and block.Bit of a pig to access. Why do the Revs hang when changing gears?
When changing gears the revs hang. If I double clutch it drops the revs. It cant be good for clutch etc,as I can feel a little surge when letting clutch out as the revs are too high for the gear change. Before anyone says that the engine keeps revs a tad high for smoother gear changes,it’s not that.Im talking way high & way too long.

Solution: When converting a petrol engine into a LPG fuel system, an approved Ford cyclinder head should be used that has special nitration hardened valves and valve seats. This will prevent premature wear and lack of power, poor idling etc. Problem: Knocking noise from the power steering system.

What to do if your Mondeo has erratic idle?
Possible throttle idle valve/sensor, should be easy to fix if that’s the problem. Check plugs are tight and leads are OK, then clean the Idle control valve if you know how. This sometimes helps. If it was the coil pack, I guess it would miss at any revs.
