Why is there engine oil in my turbo intercooler?
Why is there engine oil in my turbo intercooler?
What does cause this is a worn turbo (bearings and oil seals) or the PCV system. There is a shaft with a couple bearings in the turbo which are lubricated by engine oil. When the bearings wear or the oil seals wear, oil can make its way into the pressurized side of the turbo and be pushed into the intercooler.

If it’s only after the turbo, it’s compression side shaft oil seal. Yes i have checked all the piping running from the engine to the intercooler and the pipe from the intercooler to the top of the turbo and they all have oil in them. Then where the breather pipe goes to the diesel pump i also see oil in there.

Is your Turbo leaking oil?-Tims turbos?
If the problem is fixed on the return line, The turbo should be fine. It is very rare for it to cause damage. Hi I have a 2.2 HDI that leaks oil in the intercooler and then burns it. Usually after a long downhill when I give it some throttle there is a lot of smoke (like a fog behind me). The oil consumption is 1 quart for 2000km.
Where does the oil come from in a turbo?
Of course this seemed initially like it could be a somewhat tragic and expensive occurrence but….. upon removing the various air pipes it seems the oil is coming from the crankcase into the turbos air intake and blasting straight through – after much wiggling I was reassured the turbo remains healthy.
