Is it OK to buy a Ford Focus 1.6?
Yes, go for a petrol Focus 1.6 or 1.8. Go for a reasonable trim level too, the basic Focus’s are fairly well-basic, and road noise was a problem in our LX. I’ve read that there’s more sound-proofing in the higher speccd models.

The 1.6 petrol Focus Style is a nice balance, if your budget can be extended then a Titanium model with standard suspension is well worth considering. Thanks for the replys – a much better response than i was expecting for a first post!

What was the problem with the Ford Zetec engine?
Early versions of the engine had a problem with sticking valves – far more evident in the UK (and in cold climates), where a driving style with earlier gear changes is more common than on the Continent – unless a special Ford formulation of oil was used. Why does my focus 2002 1.6 16v?
Car idle is lumpy and pops from intake and exhaust when cold. Once warmed up the revs die to 400rpm and it often dies and wont restart until it has cooled down. If the revs are kept high it will run ok. It is only when idling. It also sticks at about 2200 rpm when revved at a standstill. The car is running too rich, plugs are black but seem ok.

Why is the O2 sensor on my focus not working?
It doesn’t mean any sensor could be faulty. It can happen due to a mechanical fault such as a return blockage or high fuel pressure. The o2 sensor detects a rich mixture and tries to weaken it. It keeps trying to adjust until it reaches its limit and then flags the fault. Mark.

Why does my focus engine stall when warm?
Engine stalls when warm is similar to an engine running on full choke when warm. It cuts out and floods engine. This is also why it doesn’t restart until it is cooler. That makes sense, would explain why it runs at higher rpms but wont idle.
When to change the idle on a Ford Zetec?
Ford says that it should be changed at 30,000 mile intervals but then they forget to mention that in their service guides and Haynes forgets it entirely. I am told it is very difficult to change. Symptoms of blockage are a decent idle when cold, which gets worse as the engine warms and then leads to complete stalling at working temps.
