When the injector seal is leaking it doesnt effect performance and its not leaking diesel, its allowing carbon directly into the engine ! causing the clogging. On my files I have some pics of 1.6tdci engines with leaking injector seals causing turbo failure.
Can you hear the Turbo whistle in a Ford Focus?
Driving around you can hear the turbo whistle as it spools up at the usual revs, if anything it is a little quieter. Reving the engine in neutral and again the turbo can be heard to spool up/down. Engine will rev to the governor limit both free and in motion.

You should be able to get a scrap turbo quite cheaply, but you would be best with a rebuilt re-con as there is not easy way of telling the condition with running them up. The Focus 1.8 TDci has a very common problem with the rubber turbo pipe on top of the engine….the one with a metal pipe attached that has an electrical connection on it.

As this would be a very quick and effective test if so. Sounds like the exhaust system is full of oil from a blown turbo (current or previous). Suggest splitting the exhaust from the down pipe, run it for some time and see if it smokes still.

Another thought, your suggestion (Helldiver) on the sensor misreading temperature of the gases going back into the engine would presumably cause problems only when hot, whereas my car kicks out unburnt diesel when hot, but also suffers from a performance problem while cold.
