Do you have to remove an oil pressure relief valve?
Do you have to remove an oil pressure relief valve?
You don’t have to remove it because you won’t have AFM Pressure spikes in the VLOM causing the need for a pressure relief situation, so you will never use it. On the other hand it could get weak and start leaking causing a low oil pressure concern. But you can’t just remove it completely. You would need to block it off.
Why did I Lose Oil pressure on my Chevy 5.3L?
Hello – since you didn’t appear to be leaking oil in a significant way (busted oil line, hole in the pan), I suspect that the oil pressure relief valve may have been stuck in the “relief” position. Some of the early 5.3l engines had trouble with this – galling in the pressure relief valve bore.
What’s the best way to remove a stuck oil filter?
The first and most common is tightening the oil filter too much. Ideally, you will oil the rubber seal, and you will tighten it using your hands only. Then use the tool to tighten it an additional 1/3, and you are done. It won’t leak, but it will be able to remove easily during the next Engine oil Change.
What can happen to an oil filter when the pressure relief?
Its purpose is to open when engine oil pressure reaches a certain value. A problem with the pressure relief valve can cause damage to the engine oil filter and to the engine itself. Modern oil pumps are either driven off the camshaft, crankshaft, or timing belt/chain.
Is there an oil pressure relief valve above the oil filter?
Instead of redesigning the existing oil pump they added the relief valve above the oil filter and more or less all Gen iv’s have it. I’m fine with 70 or 80 psi.. and so are most LS’s lol. This place sometimes. Only the AFM/DOD engines have the secondary oil pressure relief in the oil pan.

What happens when the oil pump relief valve fails?
This allows oil to flow back into the crankcase preventing excessive oil pressure. The spring tension of the relief valve determines the maximum oil pressure. Oil pump pressure relief valves can fail in either the open or closed position. This can cause damage to the engine oil filter and to the engine itself.
Which is the primary relief valve in Gen4 5.3?
The primary relief valve is in the oil pump, which is always 55 psi in the Gen4 5.3. Oil travels through the pump first, meaning that is the primary relief for the system. Deleting the oil pan relief makes absolutely no difference on oil pressure, that is controlled by the primary relief in the pump, which is 55 psi.
