What to do if your fuel gauge is not registering?

Disconnect the plug on the sending unit and test the resistance across the pins. If you do this with the fuel level low enough, you can reach in and use a wire or coat hanger to move the float in the tank. The resistance should change as the float moves. If it does not, or is open then you have a bad sending unit.
