2000 Caterpillar 420D Backhoe loader. While driving forward unit will sometimes stop and will not go forward. I then have to drive it in reverse. After a while it does work in forward again. My experience with the solenoid valves tells me it’s not the coil because they usually just quit and that’s that.

I have the same problem as “CAT 420 D POWER SHIFT transmission backhoe…rhyme” except I have a 446 Backhoe. Sometimes it will not go into gear for no apparent reason, then it will work just fine for a while.

The solenoids are installed in the transmission control valve body. The solenoids are two position-three way and are normally open to drain. When energized, the solenoid spool moves to direct pressure oil to the clutch. The transmission neutralizer switch is located on the loader control lever.
