Where is the encoder motor on a transfer case?
Where is the encoder motor on a transfer case?
These systems also allow bidirectional control for many outputs. The encoder motor (arrow) is mounted on the front of the transfer case and is used to lock it into 4WD. The scan tool data will show motor position via the en- coder circuit PIDs. There’s no need to scrape the mud off the undercarriage.
Do you have the code definitions for transfer case motor test?
The manual will have everything from the ground locations to the steps for diagnosing the TC, prob requiring a scan tool capable of interfacing with modules. Do you have the code definitions?
Is there any way to test the transfer case?
If a new shift motor assembly must be installed, it will be necessary to shift the transfer case to the AWD position prior to motor installation. Raise the vehicle on a suitable hoist.Remove the front propeller shaft.
How does the transfer case work in a car?
The operating current of the shift motor under Shifting in the transfer case occurs when the shift motor brake is released and a Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) voltage is supplied to the shift motor by the Front Control Module (FCM).

How to check the transfer case shift motor?
CLEARED. Haven’t run across this anywhere. Most folks seem to just replace and go. Cardone instructions also caution to orient the xfer case shaft TO THE MOTOR POSITION. Orienting the shaft to the motor position makes sense. Don’t have a scan tool to read/clear (GEM) codes.
