What kind of gear oil do you use?

What kind of gear oil do you use?

SAE 50 Engine Oil – While not strictly a “gear oil,” this type of lubricant is often the recommended lubricant for some manual-shift truck transmissions. This article is not intended to provide a complete recommendation of all possible applications for these fluids or for all gear sets.

Which is the best oil for manual transmission?

Selecting the right gear oil or transmission fluid is critical to the life and performance of your manual transmission. (Image/Tremec) Similar to what we discussed in our Automatic Transmission Fluid 101 post, selecting the right gear oil for your manual transmission isn’t as easy as it might seem.

Which is better mineral oil or synthetic gear oil?

For example, in extremely low temperatures, a synthetic gear oil will have a much lower viscosity than the equivalent grade of mineral oil. This can be an advantage during cold temperature start-up when channeling can cause temporary lubrication starvation, particularly in splash-lubricated gear drives.

What’s the difference between gear oil and multigrade oil?

Essentially, the first number of a multigrade oil, preceding the W, is the performance at 0°C while the second number rates it’s performance at 100°C. So a 75W-140 gear oil has similar performance to an SAE 75 gear oil while at 0°C.

What’s the difference between engine oil and gear oil?

In fact, many modern manual transmissions actually spec for automatic transmission fluid instead of a traditional gear oil. Regardless of what your manual transmission uses, the fluid or oil’s primary function is lubrication—preventing metal-to-metal contact between the meshing gears. Gear oil is different from engine oil.

Which is the best oil to use for Gears?

Unlike many oil applications, where slippery tends to be better, gears have different requirements depending on the system in question. As a general rule high viscosity oils are best for low speed, loaded gears with a rough surface. Higher viscosity provides a thicker film, higher wear resistance, and less deformation of the gears as time goes on.

Can a gear oil be used as a friction modifier?

Friction modifiers and extreme pressure additives disqualify an oil from performing in this category. These gear oils are used for worm-gear type axles, and can have additional additives on top of what is allowed in GL-1 oils. They’re still not allowed to use extreme pressure additives.
