Is there a problem with my Series 60 engine?
Discussion in ‘ Trucks ‘ started by Bob Horrell, Jun 28, 2009 . The truck is a 98 Western Star with a 12.7 liter series 60 Detroit engine (500hp). The problem is that it is loosing prime when sitting overnight and is hard to start. A description of the fuel system is as follows.
Are there any problems with the Detroit Series 60?
This issue did not affect all pre-2002 Series 60 engines, but it was a problem that occurred and could cause catastrophic engine failure. As with most engines, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on your cooling system. Overheating is the cause of many major issues with diesel engines, so maintaining this system can help with many preventable issues.
What causes a Detroit Diesel Series 60 to spin?
If there’s an issue with your throttle, that’s a good place to start. Bearing problems, particularly spun bearings, are typically caused on older Series 60 by low oil pressure at idle. A spun bearing occurs when there is a lack of lubrication causing overheating. The bearing can eventually seize, creating even more problems.
Why are my Detroit Diesel Series 60 brakes not working?
These brakes could require different programming than what is standard on the Series 60, and the disconnect could cause a loss of throttle. If this is not the issue and you’re still experiencing throttle issues, you’ll probably want to take a look at your TPS (throttle position sensor).

How to troubleshoot a Detroit Diesel Series 60?
Check the air inlet and exhaust restrictions. Visually inspect the air intake and exhaust system for restrictions; if found, repair as necessary and verify repairs. If no damage is found, go to No RPM Data Received via DDDL 7.0, refer to “4.14.2 No RPM Data Received via DDDL 7.0” .
What should the fuel pressure be on a Detroit Diesel?
Attach a calibrated gauge capable of reading 0-551 kPa (0-80 psi) to the fuel pump port. Crank or start the engine and record the reading on the gauge. If pressure is 0-60 kPa (0-10 psi) within 20 seconds of cranking, refer to “4.14.4.2 No or Low Fuel Pressure Test” , “No or Low Fuel Pressure Test.”
How to check battery voltage in Detroit Diesel?
Turn the ignition OFF. Turn ON the headlights for two to three minutes. Check the battery voltage. If the battery voltage is not below 12 volts, refer to “4.14.3.1 Battery Cable Voltage Drop Test” , “Battery Cable Voltage Drop Test.” If the battery voltage is below 12 volts, charge the batteries then proceed with the next step.
Why is my Detroit Series 60 hard start?
I have heard that check valves can be an issue on the Detroit so I replaced the check valve behind the engine and also the one that is inline on the right side of the filter housing. This seemed to somewhat help but it has not really fixed the problem much if any. Anybody have any ideas?
Why does my Harley Davidson hard start when hot?
Hard starting when HOT, but the engine spins up fine, means either lack of fuel or weak, no spark. If your Dyna is EFI, your fuel pump is losing prime/pressure due to fuel line leak…look here: http://www.hdtimeline.com/diagnosti…lated/979-engine_dies_and_runs_in_spurts.html

How to check camshaft timing on Series 60?
Check Cam timing, refer to “12.11 Incorrect Camshaft Timing” , “Incorrect Camshaft Timing” in the EPA07 Series 60 Service Manual (6SE2007). Perform DDDL 7.0 compression test service routine, based on results then perform Manual Compression Test, ( refer to “4.12.1.2 Cylinder Compression Test” ).
How to troubleshoot Series 60 DDEC VI troubleshooting?
Install breakout box J-48475 and use cables J-48583. Measure the resistance between pins 44 and 45 of the MCM 120 pin connector. If the resistance is less 140 Ω, go to step 4 . If the resistance is greater than 140 Ω, go to step 6 . Disconnect the CMP Sensor. Measure the resistance between pins 44 and 45 on the breakout box.
