- Park the lawnmower on a level surface and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood of the tractor and locate the fuel pump on the left side of the engine, below the engine shroud.
- Remove the two 3/8-inch bolts holding the fuel pump to the engine block, slide the fuel pump off.

Slide the clamps on the fuel lines back, on each end of the fuel pump, with the needle nose pliers. Slide the fuel line off each end of the fuel pump.

Worked on my L120 for 3 days pulling stuff apart and cleaning fuel lines, working on the pump, etc. It would run for 5 min then die… nothing was working… drilled out the hole in the center of the gas cap (and made it a little larger), made sure the holes in the rubber flap inside were clear… a whole 5 minute job in all… presto!

How does the fuel pump work on a John Deere lawn mower?
The fuel pump is a diaphram pump (I think) and it works off of vacuum from the engine. It is possible that I lose vacuum after the engine heats up, but I don’t know how to check that.
