Can a John Deere tractor be converted to 12V?
Can a John Deere tractor be converted to 12V?
I was advised that I should convert the 24v system to a 12v system as it would be cheaper and easier in the long run. This particular year of tractor was the last year that John Deere put the 24v system on a 3020 and apparently it can be pretty troublesome with battery drainage caused by the starter etc.
Can a model a be converted to a 12 volt system?
So with this, the total load for the Model A with the lights on running at night and trying to blow the horn would only be half as much with a 12-volt system as with a 6-volt system. Six-volt electrical systems use heavier gauge wiring to deliver the higher amperage draw. Therefore the wiring does not have to be changed when converting to 12-volts.
How to convert 6 volts to 12 volts?
1. You’ll need a 12v coil 2. If you want to have working lights, you’ll need to change them to 12v 3. You will need a 12v alternator (common type is Delco Remy SI-10 type). I’d suggest a “single wire”, “self-exciting” configuration. You can buy these at Summit Racing or Jegs, brand new, for a relatively reasonable price.
How much does a 12V conversion kit cost?
There are quite a few sources of a 12v conversion kit. They range in price from $330 to $900 plus shipping. In my research and talking with others that have worked on these for decades, the best kits are the ones that come with Nippondenso starters.

How much does a John Deere 24V generator cost?
The cost of maintaining the 24v system is pretty hefty. The starter costs in excess of $500, the generator is in excess of $500, the regulator is somewhere around $150 and the batteries are $150 each, and that is minimum prices that I found for decent parts. At John Deere you are looking at around $2000 for the components.
