Why does my GPF say exhaust filter limit reached?
Some of the Ford forums suggest that this error could be due to a sensor malfunction however we’ve seen comments with increasing frequency from owners with cars under a year old. Could it be that like a DPF, the GPF requires the same sort of conditions for regeneration?
What happens when the exhaust filter is reached?
This in turn raises the temperature of the GPF to around 400c – 700c, igniting the soot contained within the filter. In conditions where this is not possible, the vehicles engine management systems alter timing causing it to run lean. This “lean” burn increases oxygen and therefore GPF operating temperatures, allowing regeneration to occur.

We were made to believe that unlike the DPF filter, the GPF was a “maintenance free” filter which would “clean” itself under normal driving conditions.

You cannot however add 5 gallons, unless perhaps you were totally empty. Update! The dealer said the truck had 235% soot level in the dpf and wouldnt go into Regen mode by itself.
When does MSG ” clean exhaust filter ” come on?
It says the Duramax booklet when the msg “clean exhaust filter” comes on drive it above 30 mph & until it clears. If you keep driving it in a manner that doesnt allow it to clean properly, the check engine light & “reduced power” msg may/will come on. Just an update.

It will not totally shut down on you. It will just limit itself to 2000rpms. Go pull your battery cable and leave it disconnected for about a minute. Then reconnect it. It should take it out of limp for a bit unless the soot mass is heavy.
