Where is the starter mounting bolt on a MerCruiser?
Problem: Starter mounting bolt is broken off with threaded section left in motor block. Being a boat motor, access is very, very limited to the point where reaching down along the motor and feeling is the only access to the rear of the motor block. And that is just where the starter and the mounting bolt is located.
How big is the hole for the starter bolt?
There was the flat mounting surface for the starter on the motor block. Then about 1/4in long smooth-bore hole for the starter bolt dowel section, and then the beginning of the threads for the bolt. So the drill bit would extend into the hole about 1/4 inch before it encountered the broken bolt.
Why is my starter motor bolt breaking off?
Most internet comments and solutions indicate that the only way to get the broken section out of the motor is to pull the motor and then drill and extract. Comments: Note that the reason for the bolt breaking off is not really known. After the boat had set up for several weeks, I tried to start it.

Is the starter mounting ear on my Chevy broken?
It’s not almost broken off, so much as there’s a small part of it already broken off at the bottom and the remainder of it is still on the block. That would preclude trying to weld on the missing piece, but not trying to fill the space with epoxy. This hole does go all the way through, but I’m not sure if it is tapped for its entire length.

No announcement yet. So, the starter on the C10 was binding up. I figured it was a bad pinion gear and pulled the starter – only to find my starter was still in good shape and the block wasn’t. There’s a chunk about the size of my fingernail missing from the outside of the boss where the outer starter bolt goes.

The high torque starter utilizes a different case. As it pertains to the connection of the solenoid to the actual starter motor, although all solenoids are the same length, there was a copper spacer and longer screw used to make the connection in high-torque units.

What should I do if my starter is not working?
The starter pinion gear engages this wheel to make your car engine crank. Remove the starter motor and set your transmission gear to neutral. Rotate the crankshaft manually using a ratchet. There is a pulley at the front or bottom of your engine block. The pulley should move as you watch how the pion gears are reacting.

Where are the bolt holes on a Chevy starter?
Most blocks come predrilled for use with either starter, which can lead to confusion. If your car is equipped with a 12 3/4-inch flywheel with 153 teeth, the nose cone will have two attachment bolt holes across from each other. These holes will be parallel to the crankshaft.
