Can a front drive shaft be removed from a Grand Cherokee?

Front Drive shaft ? I have a 2004 Grand Cherokee Overland and was wondering if I could remove my front drive shaft without couseing problems with the transmission or transfer case ? it is a quadraa drive setup. I was wanting to see if the fuel mileage would improve?

How do you remove the drive shaft on a jeep?

Move to the transfer-case end of the drive shaft and locate the four bolts that secure the shaft to the transfer case flange. Remove the bolts with a 12mm wrench and pull the drive shaft off the flange. Lower the drive shaft down, then move it out from under the Jeep.

Can a jeep run without a front drive shaft?

But as I posted earlier there is no benefit to running without it in a GC unless you have a bad shaft and still need your wheels. There is no viscous coupling in a 247 T-case, but a progressive coupling. I did remove my front propeller shaft for some weeks awaiting a new CV joint and my T-case is still ok.

What happens when the front drive shaft is removed?

Once the front drive shaft is removed, then you trash your transfer case. I did this with a ’96 ZJ 249 t-case with no ill effects because I had to get the shaft rebuilt and it was my only vehicle.
