Common questions

What causes a 2 stroke plug to foul?

What causes a 2 stroke plug to foul?

Worn or damaged pistons leak oil which fouls the spark plugs. A too rich air/fuel mixture is a great way to ruin a spark plug. If your bike releases a lot of black smoke you might have a “rich fuel” environment. Bad jetting, bad gas and an incorrect gas to premix ratio all result in fouled spark plugs.

How do you tell if a 2 stroke plug is fouled?

Signs that your boat’s spark plugs are failing include:

  1. Trouble starting the engine.
  2. Engine hesitating or cutting out.
  3. Loss of engine power.
  4. Decreased acceleration.

What should I do if my spark plugs keep fouling?

This should clean the plugs if the cause of the fouling is nothing unusual. If the spark plugs continue to misfire because of fouling, they may be dirty or worn. Remove and inspect the spark plugs, and either clean or replace them as needed.

Where does oil fouling on a spark plug come from?

The oil can come from the piston rings, valve stem seals or the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system. Leaking piston rings can be diagnosed with a leak-down test. If one cylinder has oil fouling, a relative compression check can help to assess mechanical issues with that cylinder.

Why do I lose compression past the spark plug threads?

Using teflon tape on the threads stops the leak. It does this a bit on the other cylinders as well but not nearly as much. Another strange thing is that the compression on cylinder #4 is higher when the motor is cold and decreases about 25-30 psi when the motor is warm. Maybe the plug hole expanding and allowing more air to escape?

What causes carbon to foul the spark plugs?

If a fuel injector is clogged or sticking open, extra fuel can cause carbon problems. If the mass air flow sensor or oxygen sensors are not accurately reporting the air coming into the engine or the oxygen content in the exhaust stream, it could cause a rich-running condition that can cause carbon to foul the spark plugs.

What to do if your spark plug is fouling?

If one cylinder has oil fouling, a relative compression check can help to assess mechanical issues with that cylinder. Malfunctioning PCV systems are becoming a leading cause of oil fouling in modern engines. These systems have become more than just a spring-loaded check valve.

Why are my spark plugs fouled with carbon?

In this instance, a case of hard starting was the result of carbon buildup on the plugs. The plug on the left is fouled with carbon. Compare it to the new plug on the right.

Is it OK to foul a spark plug on a dirt bike?

If it’s properly jetted, you should never foul a spark plug, assuming your engine is in good running condition. If you want to go the easy route (well not really!), just ride the bike harder.

What causes oil fouling in a car engine?

Malfunctioning PCV systems are becoming a leading cause of oil fouling in modern engines. These systems have become more than just a spring-loaded check valve. Modern systems can separate oil from the crankcase vapors and electronically regulate when the engine ingests the vapors.
