I tested the battery and it was 11.75v then started the truck and it was still 11.5v. (note battery was low because i got done driving). So I took off the alternator and went to a local auto store and got it tested and resulted as “good” scoring at 15.37 volts. Dropped it back in, still same scores when engine is off or on.

In case anyone reads this in the future, when you start your Dakota/Durango and the Vehicle Starts, Voltage Guage goes up to 10-11 Volts then drops down to 0 and “check gauges” light comes on, your first check is the Big Fuse located in the ECM (engine Control Module). Usually 120-140 or 160 depending on your alternator.

OK now that is starting to make sense. If the dash gauge switches over from reading battery voltage to alternator voltage after the engine starts, and there’s a diode between the alt. output and the battery, it would explain a lot. I will take readings at the alternator and let you know what I find.

Lesson learned, volt gauge on the dashboard dropping all the way down likely means alternator. Funny thing is it’s probably set up that way in the ECM to warn the average (clueless) person of something wrong.

Reading 15.2 without a load and 15.8 to 16 with a load but never goes any higher. It may be coincidence but it seems like it started right after I had the intake manifold off doing the plenum plate upgrade.

You should have not just a positive charging lead, but also a second two pin sense and excitation plug on the back of the alternator. Make sure this plug is in and secure.
