What is DEF filling?

What is DEF filling?

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is a non-hazardous solution, which is 32.5% urea and 67.5% de-ionized water. DEF is sprayed into the exhaust stream of diesel vehicles to break down dangerous NOx emissions into harmless nitrogen and water. DEF is not a fuel additive and never comes into contact with diesel.

How do I know if my DEF is full?

Checking and topping off your diesel’s exhaust fluid level is a simple but important part of your routine vehicle maintenance. If your diesel runs completely out of DEF, a red warning indicator will light up and the vehicle’s speed will be drastically reduced.

How often do you have to fill up on DEF?

CALCULATING DEF REQUIREMENTS DEF is consumed at a rate of about 2-3% relative to the amount of fuel you are using. This means between 1.2 and 2.0 gallons of DEF will be required for a vehicle with a 65-gallon gas tank. If you have a five-gallon DEF tank, DEF should be replaced every third or fourth time you fill up.

Why do service stations use def exhaust fluid?

Also to blame: well-meaning service station attendants, techs at non-diesel shops, and even owners of gas rigs hoping to reap the benefit of increased fuel economy. The truth, of course, is that DEF is only useful in a rig with a DEF system, which consists of a separate tank, filler cap and fluid lines as well as a specialized exhaust system.

Why does my Def fluid not update after refill?

After a refill it may be necessary to drive the vehicle for a few miles before the DEF fluid information will update on the DIC. If the vehicle has been driven for a few miles, the ignition has been turned off (allowing the ECM to go to sleep for at least 5 minutes), and the DIC will not update, the message may have become latched into the ECM.

What happens to the fuel system when DEF is used?

DEF is corrosive and, as you are about to see, causes severe damage to the fuel system. Early symptoms include hard starting, rough idle and smoking exhaust, and a DEF-contaminated engine may not start at all. The recommend repair is to replace the entire fuel system, from tank to injectors.

How much does it cost to repair a Def contaminated fuel system?

The recommend repair is to replace the entire fuel system, from tank to injectors. We’ve seen reports of Ford dealerships quoting between $12,000 and $20,000 to replace a DEF-contaminated fuel system.

Why do you only put 2 gallons in service DEF system?

I guessing the only reason they mention to only put in 2 gallons when the gauge is at half full is your tank only holds 5 gallons. They CTD and EcoD probably use the same sending/level assembly and I’ve pumped in 6 gallons at once. FCA probably doesn’t want you to over fill the tank as the DEF needs room to expand when it freezes.

Do you have to fill DEF tank with each fill-up?

2. Do I have to fill the DEF tank with each fill-up? No, depending on how much you’re hauling, the rate of DEF use is about 2.5 gallons for 800 or so miles of travel. Depending on what year and model truck you have, you could have a fuel-gauge-like readout ( Ram ), a digital indicator ( GM) or a simple “low” light ( Ford ). 3.
