As an aside, there was a review somewhere (pickuptrucks.com?) that tested loaded RAM Cummins (and other HD diesels) down long grades out West. They claimed that Auto EB required fewer brake applications than Full EB using T/H downhill. Have heard others confirm this as well.

Why is the exhaust brake not working on my Dodge Ram?
Last night, after a pit stop, I noticed the red lightning bolt, yellow engine light on. Not blinking or flashing, just steady. The truck started, ran, had plenty of power etc. But the exhaust brake stopped working. After doing some research here, and hooking up a smarty jr to see what codes I had, I found a p2509.

It helps work the vanes in your turbo which can prevent them from being clogged up. Plus it sounds cool and makes your brakes last a little longer so why not Use it use it use it. The more it is used the less likely of a soot buildup issue.
