How to control boost in a wastegate system?

How to control boost in a wastegate system?

In order to get more boost than the spring pressure in the wastegate actuator, pressure needs to be bled off or blocked from the hose going to the wastegate actuator. This in turn delays when the wastegate will start to open and control boost. Think of this as tricking the wastegate as to what boost it’s seeing.

When does the wastegate actuator start to open?

Boost pressure is applied to the canister and once the boost is higher than the spring pressure inside the canister, the wastegate actuator rod starts to move and open the wastegate. The actuator doesn’t open the wastegate fully at a given single pressure.

Why do you need an external wastegate in a turbo?

An external wastegate is used to drive exhaust gasses away from the turbocharger to regulate turbine speeds and therefore boost pressure. Selecting the correct wastegate size depends on the amount of exhaust to be bypassed, the desired boost pressure, and the amount of exhaust gas the turbo requires to reach that boost pressure.

How to set wastegate 2 full turns in from neutral?

For the VR Tuned Big Injector kit, we recommend setting the wastegate to 2 FULL turns in from neutral. STEP 1 – Access the wastegate by removing the plastic cover located on the back center of the firewall

How does the wastegate affect the turbo boost?

The more exhaust you divert through the wastegate (the more you open the wasetgate door), the more you slow the turbo down and this is how you lower boost. This wastegate is pushed open or held closed by the wastegate actuator and a number of other variables such as exhaust pressure.

When does an external wastegate open or close?

If an external wastegate is fitted with springs rated to 7PSI, it will open when it receives 7PSI of pressure to the actuator. Any pressure lower than that will not be able to overcome the spring force, and it will remain closed. * Note: this spring function is explained for a dynamic condition when installed on a vehicle.
