Why does my gas tank shut off every few seconds?
Every time we try to fill the tank, the pump shuts off every few seconds, as though the tank is full. Our mechanic replaced the refueling vapor valve ($400 with labor) which did not fix the problem. Ideas? Now have him investigate a stuck “Anti-spill roll-over check valve”.

The click noise you are hearing is the fuel backing up in the fill tube and causing the pump handle to turn off as a safety precaution to keep fuel from coming out and spilling or getting you covered in fuel. The pump handle safety was intended to prevent you from overfilling your tank.

Angling the fuel nozzle into the fill pipe differently usually does the trick. i.e. Holding the handle up instead of letting it hang down, or rotate it a bit in the fill tube mouth. Also, make sure the compression cuff around the nozzle is fully in contact with the mouth of the fill tube, and compressed against it.
