My 2006 Dodge Ram workshop manual suggests that removing the transmission is necessary for replacing the oil pan. However, being a former dealership mechanic, I very much doubt that the dealer mechanics follow the book on this.

You could contact Cummins directly and get an OEM pan for a little less than the dealer. There’s also a company that sells stainless steel oil pans. The stainless pans are pretty neat looking, but they’re not inexpensive.

Where do you remove the oil pan from an oil pump?

The oil pan bolts are located around the outer edge of the oil pan and removed using a wrench. Locate the oil pump suction tube after the oil pan bolts are out. It is located next to the oil pump and should be disconnected before moving the oil pan. The oil pan will fall off once you remove the tube.
