Do you have to disconnect track rods to adjust steering?

It is not necessary to disconnect the t rack rods; the inner ends of the track rods turn freely on their ball joints at the ends of the rack as you turn the rods to adjust their outer ends. Adjust both rods by equal amounts, except on VWs and Audis, which have only one adjustable rod to alter their steering.

Where is the tie rod on a steering rack?

First thing to do is separate the tie rod ends from the suspension struts. For better access, turn the steering to each side. A 17mm thread lock nut holds the tie rod end to the strut so get this undone and then drop the tie rod from the strut.

What causes steering wheel to shake when tie rod is worn out?

Steering wheel shakes or feels loose. As indicated above, the tie rod end is designed to make sure everything is solid in the suspension. When it wears out, it tends to bounce or have some play in the tie rod end. As a vehicle accelerates, this play or loose condition will cause a vibration to set in that is noticed in the steering wheel.

To connect your new rack to your wheels, you need inner and outer tie rods on each side. The good news is that you can use standard E30 units, so if your current ones are in good condition then there’s no need to buy new parts. However, you CAN’T use complete inner and outer rods from newer BMWs. You can use either….., but not both.

How big is the throw of the steering rod?

Total throw of the steering rod is about 6 1/4″. When disconnected the motor is totally free and movement exceeds steering rod movement in either direction. The steering cable is reasonably free when turning the steering wheel, with or without the motor connected.
