What are open Embrasures? Open gingival embrasures, also known as “black triangles,” refer to empty space below the interproximal contact when the space is not filled with gingiva. They cause not only esthetic but also periodontal problems related to chronic food retention. What is a spillway in dentistry? A pathway through which food debris can escape during mastication. An interdental spillway is formed by the interproximal contours of adjacent teeth and gingival tissues. An occlusal spillway is a groove that crosses a cusp or marginal ridge of a tooth.
