What was the function of ignition timing advance? Ignition timing advance was handled mechanically via a vacuum diaphragm and/or centrifugal weights. When GM introduced the engine computer in the early 80’s, the function of timing advance was handled electronically instead of mechanically. Why does the cam sensor not send a signal to the ignition coil? Since, the Ignition Control Module really doesn’t send a physical signal (like the Crank or Cam Sensor does to the Switching Device) to the Ignition Coil (s). Why?
